How to Increase Your PR Rank

http://www.asiogroups.com/2008/07/27/how-to-increase-you-blogs-pr/

Blogs with High PR ranks have to recognize your blog and have to link to your blog.

Jason Calacanis - CEO of Mahalo

Jason Calacanis is founder and CEO of Mahalo, and founded and ran both Weblogs Inc. and the Silicon Alley Reporter.

Knol stands for "unit of Knowledge" and it's a very well-designed Wikipedia/Mahalo style content publishing play. It's very similar to the New York Times' forgotten About.com, Seth Godin's spam-filled Squidoo, the flawed-but-fascinating Wikipedia, and of course my new project Mahalo.com.

Google-dependent businesses

Many of the biggest and best companies today have Google as their top source of traffic. Reportedly digg is 50% Google traffic, About.com 85%, and Wikipedia 70% Google traffic. That means that people don't go to these sites directly, as much as they go to Google and do a search and click on their result.

It seems that Google, the greatest web-business ever created, is not satisfied with owning over 70% of search--now they want to own the first couple of pages in their search results. So, if you're digg.com, About.com, NYTimes.com, and Wikipedia you're faced with not only being traffic-dependent on Google, you're now competing with them for the traffic within their search result.

They've been an amazing partner to me. The revenue from Google Adsense reached over one million a year for Weblogs, Inc. when we were still a private company. The $4,000 a day we were making paid our bloggers' salaries and gave me the biggest win of my life.

Nephrologist To Pro Blogger MacRumors' Arnold Kim

MacRumors' traffic has grown substantially. Quantcast reports that the site is now generating a staggering 37 million page views a month.

He started MacRumors.com in February of 2000. He was in 4th and last year of medical school.

The dabbling in the web was for fun. The natural interest of turned into a website. Over the next 8 years, he completed medical school, an Internal Medicine residency, a fellowship in Nephrology and even worked two years in private practice as a physician (Nephrologist).

Creating and Publishing a New Knol

To create a new knol page, click Write a New Knol at the right side of the screen, under your profile. If this is the first time you have accessed the Knol site, the system will automatically create a new knol for you and put you in edit mode.
For every knol:
1. Enter a title. Try to include keywords in the title for easier searchability.
2. Enter a subtitle. The subtitle is optional but it makes it easier for readers to get an idea of the knol content.
3. Enter a summary and alternative titles (optional) at the top.
4. Set the publishing mode for the knol. By default your knol starts out unpublished. You can decide to publish your knol at any time by clicking on the Publish button in the author controls on the right hand side of your knol.
5. Set the permissions for who can edit your knol. By default, Moderated Collaboration is set (at the right). This means that if someone suggests a change to the page, you must approve the change before it is made. You can also disable collaboration at all or make pages open to anyone who wishes to change them.
6. Select your copyright settings at the right. By default, a Creative Commons Attribution license is specified. You can change this to “All Rights Reserved” (a non-public, traditional copyright choice that prohibits reuse of your materials without express permission) or to a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial license, which permits reuse of your knol, provided the reuse gives proper attribution and is not for commercial purposes. Learn more about license options for your knol here.

Saving and Publishing Your Work

As you work on your knol, you can click Save to save drafts of your work (the button at the right of the toolbar). When your knol is complete, click Close to exit editing mode. If your knol is currently published (i.e. visible to the public), then every time you click on Save, your saved knol will be made public, replacing the previous version. Please remember to publish your knol only when you are ready to share it with the public.

Entering Text into a New or Existing Knol

To edit an exisiting knol, first display the knol. You can see a list of all the knols you have written by clicking on the My Knols link at the top of the screen. Initially the knol displays in View mode. To edit your knol, click on the Edit tab.

To enter the contents of your knol:

1. The Knol platform provides basic tools to create your own knol. Simply type your knol into the editing screen and use the formatting tools (described below) to enter your text.
2. If you prefer, you can type your text using another editor and paste the contents into a knol. Just use the copy and paste commands in the usual way.
3. Import another document (e.g. a Microsoft Word document or a .PDF file) and create a new knol. To import a document, click on the Manage tab and choose the General tab. Then click on Import Knol to proceed.

Using the Formatting Bar to Edit a Knol

The formatting bar allows you to format your text. If you put put your mouse pointer over each of the icons, a box will appear, describing what the icon does. The tools work in a standard way, just like other editors including Microsoft Word and Google Documents. For example, highlighting a word of text and then clicking on the B icon will make the highlighted text bold.

Headings and Text Formats

The Format pulldown menu allows you to format text as headings or subheadings. You can also use the pulldown to choose a font and a font size directly.

Google Knol - Wikipedia comment

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales commented that it "is a bit early to tell" whether Knol will generate the sort of content that would make it an encyclopedia.

In the present format, it seems far more like a collaborative blogging platform that will generate lot of opinion pieces rather than encyclopedic content.

Google has to think of ways of classifying content into rated and unrated and give rating of authenticity and rating of usefulness etc. to provide assurance to readers that the information is more accurate.

One feature of Knol that provides assurance is the credentials of authors which is a must in Knol.

Knol - A complement to your blog

July 23, 2008

Google announced the public launch of knol and it is a complement your blog.

Blogs are great for quickly and easily getting your latest writing out to your readers, while knols are better for when you want to write an authoritative article on a single topic. The tone is more formal, and, while it's easy to update the content and keep it fresh, knols aren't designed for continuously posting new content or threading. Know how to fix a leaky toilet, but don't want to write a blog about fixing up your house? In that case, Knol is for you.

Except for the different format, you'll get all the things you've come to expect from Blogger in Knol. Like Blogger, Knol has simple web authoring tools that make it easy to collaborate, co-author, and publish. It has community features as well: Your readers will be able to add comments and rate your article, and, if you want, they'll be able to suggest edits that you can then either accept or reject. And, just like in Blogger, you can also choose to include ads from AdSense in your knols to perhaps make a little money.

One other important difference between Knol and Blogger is that Knol encourages you to reveal your true identity. Knols are meant to be authoritative articles, and, therefore, they have a strong focus on authors and their credentials. We feel that this focus will help ensure that authors get credit for their work, make the content more credible.

Knol will be a great new way for you to share what you know, inform people about an issue that is important to you, raise your profile as an expert in your field, and maybe even make some money from ads.

Value of a Blog

AOL-Weblogs Inc. Deal – Benchmark for Future Blog Valuation

Weblogs Inc was established by Jason Calacanis and Brian Alvey in 2003. It is a network of blogs which includes under its wings successful blogs such as Engadget and Autoblog. Jason Calacanis pointed out that Weblogs Inc. earns in excess of $1 million yearly in Google Adsense revenues alone.

AOL purchased Weblogs Inc. for a confidential sum assessed at somewhere between $25 - $40 million.

Tristan Louis itemized the publicly available data (list of blogs indexed) at Weblogs Inc. network including the number of inbound links (Technorati blog numbers) per blog divided by the purchase price to determine the value of an inbound link to a blog. At the rumored price of $25 million, the estimated value is $ 564 per link. At $30 million, it is $677.57 per link and $903.42 at an acquisition price of $40 million.

Applying Tristan Louis's Weblogs Inc, sale, Dave Winer has also sold http://Weblogs.com to Verisign for a rumored price of around $2 million.

Some bloggers value traffic anywhere from $3 to $10 per hit a day. From this data, a blog with 2000 unique visitors (page views) would be worth between $6000 to $20,000.

Some bloggers opine you should expect six to eight months earnings as your blog value. A blog with a daily income of $150 would be worth between $27,000 - $36,000. Still, others determine a blog's value as being two years of current earnings. A blog earning $150 a day would be worth $108,000.

20% of total revenue going to the top 1% of blogs

Top Blogs accounting for significant amount of Web Advertising?

A new study being published by the University of Texas and Chitika says that the top 50,000 blogs may have generated around $500 million in aggregate 2006 revenue.

I would say only around the top 20,000 blogs make good money.

How much is good money? Well, at least $1000 per month.

Micheal Arrington says:"An interesting conclusion is that blog revenue may defy the “80/20 rule”, with even more revenue going to top blogs than usual, with 20% of total revenue going to the top 1% of blogs.

http://www.watblog.com/2007/08/02/top-blogs-accounting-2-3-entire-web-advertising/

as internet advertising is estimated to be $25 billion mark for 2006, it looks like blogs are accounting for around 2-3% of the entire amount spent on internet advertising. Web sites must be taking the remaining. In which case are blogging platforms successful ventures?

Estimation method:

Using Chitika revenue numbers from 2006 and assuming that bloggers will, on average,
diversify across. 3 revenue sources, and assuming that they will typically try out other sources that will generate similar revenue streams, it is safe to estimate that the total estimated revenue for their blog will be at least 3 times the revenue attained through Chitika.

· With the sample data set, (BlogID, Rank, 2006 Revenue) standard statistical predictive modeling techniques (in this case, the specific regression model used was a variant of the Pareto model) were used to estimate the advertising revenue earned by blogs across all ranks.

People who are really in the business of making a living off content pages say they average about $10 a page per year.

How to earn more than $10,000 per month from your blog

My friend Michael makes an average of $370 per day on his blog. That’s an annualized income of $133,200 from blogging. I’ll leave out his last name so that I don’t violate his Adsense ‘Terms of Service’. ( For those who don’t know, it is against Google policy to directly discuss one’s Adsense earnings for a particular site ). The other day I sat down for lunch with Michael and asked him for his story: In a little more than 18 months, he went from earning less than $1/day to quitting his day job, and building a successful site.

His advice was priceless…

There is a reason to cheer, reason to celebrate and reason to share!! We have crossed $10000 in our online earnings this year on 7th May 2008 and it’s an achievement in itself. The earnings by end of day on 7th May reached to $10150.93 to be exact. If you count, it’s 128 days we took to achieve this milestone. That’s a whooping $79.30 per day online earning.

Chetan said in May 8th, 2008 Great success man!

Could you go more precisely?
Like how many sites you manage to make the total income to this much?
Or is it just this blog which is producing this much income?

Life is Colourful replied: May 8th, 2008

Chetan, not many sites or blogs I maintain - less than 8-10.
But majorly I get revenue from this blog, finance blog and completely niche technology blog. Rest of them are still maintained because I try to experiment with others.

I Made $10,899.83 From Blogging in SeptemberWritten by Yaro
October 12, 2007 |

Back in March of this year, 2007, I reported my blogging income of $6549.52. September, while a slower month for net usage because the northern hemisphere is rapping up the holiday period (people go outside when the weather is nice instead of sit inside on their computers, thus reducing traffic and income from some advertising programs), turned out to be my best month yet for blog income.

The total I made from blogging and blog related activities in September 2007 was: $10,899.83.

The income listed by source is available in the list to the right. I grouped together revenue streams into general broad categories, rather than break it down by each income source like I did last time, since the list is become quite long. You should still get a good sense for how the money is generated.

Note in reality the money I received was over $13,000 because a few sponsors renewed six month contracts, but I divided the half year payments by six in order to get the share for September only so as to not artificially inflate the total. This list does not include the income from Blog Mastermind.

Other highlights in September included breaking the 5,000 RSS readers mark at this blog and also surpassing 12,000 people subscribed to my email list.

Google adsense income was around $800

$10,000 bloggers - 1

4% of ProBlogger Readers are Six Figure Bloggers

Early results after 24 hours on this week’s poll show that 12% of ProBlogger readers are earning over $1000 per month from blogging and 4% are earning over $10,000 (making them six figure bloggers if they average that over a year).

At the other end of the spectrum 25% don’t earn anything.

I wish now I’d put two categories of the ‘earn nothing’ category, one for ‘I tried but earned nothing’ and another for ‘I haven’t tried’. I’d be interested if you are one of the 100 voters in this category to hear which you are in comments of the post announcing the poll.

Of those who have earned something it is the ‘under $10 category’ that is most common followed by the $100 to $499 a month category (15%).

Interestingly this survey I added a $15,000 or more category (last time the top one was a $10,000 or more one) and it has actually been voted in more than other lower levels (3% of total vote so far).

Blogism

In my journey from my home to office, today, I thought of blogism. I felt blogism has to be developed on the lines of journalism.

I came to the office and searched the net for 'blogism'. They are many entries. So far I liked this entry.

If writing journals eventually evolved into journalism, will blogging blogs someday give us blogism? Will it be taught in colleges, will there be a Columbia School of Blogism?
